At the Film Society of Lincoln Center on December 12, the New York premiere of THE SKY CRAWLERS directed by Mamoru Oshii (GHOST IN THE SHELL). Winner of the Future Film Festival’s Digital Award at this year’s Venice Film Festival, the much-loved mysterioso director turns in a metaphorical animated film about air battles in a future world. At MoMA until December 17, Suman Mukhopadhyay’s HERBERT is this Bengali theater director’s first film, and one that’s been hailed as challenging and ambitious. Herbert is a marginal loner whose life intersects – ZELIG-like – with Calcutta’s ever-morphing history over the last 50 years. He finally achieves notoriety by claiming he can speak with the dead and then…his coffin explodes at his own funeral. Very strange, but not the kind of movie you expect from India these days. At Film Forum, Paul Schrader’s MISHIMA: A LIFE IN FOUR CHAPTERS plays on December 17- December 23. The film follows the passionate and notorious life of Japanese novelist, Mishima. It is also noteworthy for the people who have come together to create the final product: Ken Ogata as Mishima, design by Eiko Ishioka (Coppola’s Dracula) score by Philip Glass, exec producers Francis Coppola and George Lucas. On December 10, at the Korea Society, the screening of Kim Cheol-gyu’s TV drama, HWANG JIN YI, part two “Birth of a Kisaeng,” a luscious tale about the famous kisaeng (Korean courtesan), Hwang Jin Yi, who broke the rules with grace and beauty. Her mind and wit matched her physical splendor, but her talent in the arts and music made history. (More info)

At ImaginAsian, Tarun Mansukhani’s DOSTANA turns in a Bollywood remake of I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU CHUCK AND LARRY set in Miami, for the whole family. Two male buddies pretend to be lovers to attain a sweet apartment in happening Miami, but things get shaken up when they start vying for the same bikini-wearing woman. (More info)

Now showing all over town, SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE directed by Danny Boyle (TRAINSPOTTING, 28 DAYS LATER), winner of the People’s Choice Award at the 2008 Toronto Film Festival. A teen orphan from the ghetto of Mumbai is on the verge of winning big when he is arrested for cheating on a game show. Starring Bollywood lion, Anil Kapoor and with music by India’s greatest film composer, A.R. Rahman. (Screening everywhere)
