Also at the MoMA on December 11, Suman Mukhopadhyay’s HERBERT is this Bengali theater director’s first film, and one that’s been hailed as challenging and ambitious. Herbert is a marginal loner whose life intersects – ZELIG-like – with Calcutta’s ever-morphing history over the last 50 years. He finally achieves notoriety by claiming he can speak with the dead and then…his coffin explodes at his own funeral. Very strange, but not the kind of movie you expect from India these days. At ImaginAsian, Tarun Mansukhani’s DOSTANA turns in a Bollywood remake of I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU CHUCK AND LARRY set in Miami, for the whole family. Two male buddies pretend to be lovers to attain a sweet apartment in happening Miami, but things get shaken up when they start vying for the same bikini-wearing woman. (More info)

Also playing at ImaginAsian, Dibakar Banerjee’s OYE LUCKY! LUCKY OYE! Lucky Singh had it all — the moves, charm, and all the money he could steal. Living the life of a high class thief, he seems to always have luck on his side. (Here’s the trailer)

On December 10, at the Korea Society, the screening of Kim Cheol-gyu’s TV drama, HWANG JIN YI, part two “Birth of a Kisaeng,” a luscious tale about the famous kisaeng (Korean courtesan), Hwang Jin Yi, who broke the rules with grace and beauty. Her mind and wit matched her physical splendor, but her talent in the arts and music made history. (More info)

On December 5 – December 7, at Anthology Film Archives, Wang Bing’s FENGMING: A CHINESE MEMOIR takes us through the memorable life of Fengming who witnessed firsthand the remarkable and dramatic changes of the Chinese government and society. (More info)

Now showing, SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE directed by Danny Boyle (TRAINSPOTTING, 28 DAYS LATER), winner of the People’s Choice Award at the 2008 Toronto Film Festival. A teen orphan from the ghetto of Mumbai is on the verge of winning big when he is arrested for cheating on a game show. Starring Bollywood lion, Anil Kapoor and now playing all over town.

On December 7, showing at the MoMA, Chris Smith’s THE POOL featuring legends and stars of Indian films. Venkatesh works at a high-class hotel in Panjim, Goa and is ever so curious about the privileged life of the wealthy. As he interacts with the wealthy owner of a mansion, he gains knowledge about the untouchable world while learning about his own fate. (More info)
